In 2016, the 1906 Group Established The Art of Building, an Aritst-in-Residency program which invites emerging artists from a variety of mediums to visually capture and share the story of building.
As part of The Art of Building, 1906 Group employs a Photographer-in-Residence who spends a year or two visiting job sites, offices, and manufacturing facilities across the United States within 1906 Group’s portfolio, documenting the art of building through photography. The photographer captures the essence of the building process, showcasing the skills and hard work of the craft workers who make it all possible. On occasion, 1906 Group also collaborates with artists in other mediums, such as sketching, illustration, and painting, to capture The Art of Building.
The program aims to celebrate the "champions" of the building industry – the craft workers – who play a vital role in constructing our nation's infrastructure. Their tireless efforts deserve recognition, and The Art of Building program is dedicated to capturing and preserving their contributions to the built environment.
